Clopay EZ-Set Torsion Springs: What They Are and What to Do When One Breaks

EZ-Set is the spring system on many Clopay, Ideal, and Holmes doors. The springs sit above the door like standard torsion springs, but each is wound by a winder unit at the end of the shaft instead of at the centre. When one breaks, we normally convert the door to standard torsion springs rather than fit another EZ-Set spring.

Works for:
Clopay, Ideal, and Holmes doors, mostly builder-grade and big-box-store doors from the late 1990s onward.

EZ-Set style torsion spring with winding units at the ends of the shaft

How do I know I have an EZ-Set system?

Look at the ends of the spring shaft above the door. On a standard torsion setup the springs are anchored to a bracket at the centre of the door and wound there. On an EZ-Set door, each spring is held at the outer end by a winder: a housing on the end bracket with a drive socket and black plastic tabs. The springs look stretched out, with visible gaps between the coils, where standard springs are wound tight.

The door is a Clopay, Ideal, or Holmes. Ideal developed the system, Holmes used it, and Clopay bought both companies, so it turns up under all three names. Many of these doors have no model sticker at all, which matters when it comes to ordering parts.

What does a broken EZ-Set spring look like?

The same as any torsion spring: a gap in the coils, a bang from the garage, a door that's too heavy to lift, and an opener that raises it a few inches and stops. The broken spring guide has the full list.

On EZ-Set, the break often pulls the winding cone out of the winder or snaps the plastic tabs, so the winder itself frequently needs replacing too.

Why does ClearTech convert EZ-Set doors to standard torsion springs?

An EZ-Set spring is a specific gapped spring that has to match the door model or its weight, and a standard spring can't go into an EZ-Set winder. With no sticker on the door, ordering means weighing the door and waiting for the part.

A conversion fits a standard centre bracket, end bearing plates, and springs that we carry in a range of sizes, so the repair is done in one visit and the door can be serviced by anyone afterward. The door, tracks, and opener stay as they are. The price is usually close to a like-for-like repair, and we quote both.

If you'd rather keep the EZ-Set system, say so when you book and we'll quote it like-for-like.

Can I replace an EZ-Set spring myself?

The system was designed for installation with a drill, which is where the name comes from. We still advise against it. The winder is under full spring tension, and a stripped drive socket or a broken tab lets go without warning. Measuring the old spring to order a new one is unreliable as well, because paint and coil gaps throw off the numbers. We'd rather you spend the call on a setup that doesn't need doing again.

More about Spring Repair

When to call us

  • The door won't open, or lifts a few inches and stops. Leave it closed and book a spring repair.
  • The winder is damaged or the spring has come out of it. That's part of the same visit.
  • The door has two springs and still runs, but slowly and with strain. One has gone and the other is carrying double.
  • You want to know the price of a conversion first. Send the door's width and height and a photo of one end of the shaft.

We look at the whole door, not just the part that failed, and tell you plainly what it needs.

Common Questions

My Clopay door has EZ-Set extension springs along the tracks, not torsion. Same advice?

Yes. The signs of a break are the same, and the fix we recommend is an extension-to-torsion conversion when the door has the headroom for it. Our spring repair page covers when that's possible.

Will my opener and remotes work after the conversion?

Yes. The conversion changes the springs and the hardware on the shaft above the door, not the opener or the tracks.
