How to Test Your Garage Door's Balance

Close the door, pull the red release cord, lift the door by hand to about waist height, and let go. A balanced door stays put or drifts slowly. A door that drops or shoots up has a spring problem, and the opener has been covering for it.

Works for:
Any sectional door with an opener. Worth doing once a year, and any time the door gets louder, slower, or the opener seems to strain.

Garage door disconnected from the opener and held open at waist height by hand for a balance test

Before you start

  • A clear doorway. Keep kids, pets, and cars out of it.
  • A second person to spot a heavy double door is a good idea.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Close the door fully with the opener. Never pull the release with the door open: if a spring is weak, the door can drop.

  2. Step 2: Pull the red release cord hanging from the opener rail so the door is disconnected. On a wall-mount opener, pull the release handle down until it clicks. The power outage guide has the steps for each opener type.

  3. Step 3: Lift the door by hand through its full travel. It should move smoothly with one hand and without catching. If it sticks or grinds, the rollers, hinges, or tracks need attention before the balance means anything.

  4. Step 4: Lift the door to about waist height, 1 m or so, and let go, keeping your hands close.

  5. Step 5: Read the result. Stays where you left it: balanced. Drifts slowly up or down: acceptable, but worth watching. Slams shut or shoots up: out of balance, and the springs need adjusting.

Also look at the cables with the door closed. Both should be taut and sitting in the grooves of the drums. A slack cable means the door is being carried unevenly.

  6. Step 6: Reconnect the opener. On most rail openers, pull the cord back toward the motor, then run one full cycle from the wall button so the trolley picks the door up. On T-rail and wall-mount units, pull the cord straight down again and run a cycle.

Annual Tune-Up

Annual garage door tune up in Winnipeg: a yearly check-up that catches small issues before they fail. Lubrication, hardware tightening, balance check, auto-reverse test, manual release verification, about an hour on site.

More about Annual Tune-Up

Still stuck? Here is what it usually is.

  • The door drops or slams shut. The springs are weak or one has broken. That's a spring repair.
  • The door shoots up or won't stay closed. The springs are over-tensioned, which is just as hard on the opener. Same call.
  • The door sticks or grinds by hand. Worn rollers, dry hinges, or a bent track. See cable and roller repair.
  • The door is heavier on one side or sits crooked. A cable has stretched, frayed, or come off its drum.
  • Everything passed but the opener still strains or reverses. Now you know it's the opener, not the door.

We look at the whole door, not just the part that failed, and tell you plainly what it needs.

Common Questions

How often should I do this?

Once a year is plenty, and it's one of the checks in our annual tune-up. Do it sooner if the door gets louder or slower, or after a spring has been replaced.

The door fails the test but the opener still lifts it. Why fix it?

Because the opener is lifting dead weight it was never designed for. The drive gear wears, the top panel flexes where the arm pulls on it, and the safety reverse may not trigger when it should because the opener is already working at its limit. A balanced door is also the only kind that stays put if the opener lets go.

Can I adjust the springs myself?

No. Torsion springs are wound with bars under hundreds of pounds of force, and a slip sends the bar through whatever is in its path. Extension springs are adjusted with the door open, when they still hold tension. Both are the jobs that put people in hospital. We'll balance it in the same visit as any other repair.
