How to Use Lock Mode on a LiftMaster or Chamberlain Wall Control
Hold the LOCK button on the wall control for 2 seconds. The LED starts blinking and the opener ignores every remote until you hold LOCK for 2 seconds again. The wall control button and the outdoor keypad keep working. If your remotes stopped working and the wall control LED is blinking, this is why.
- Works for:
- LiftMaster and Chamberlain multi-function wall controls with a LOCK button, including the 882LMW and similar push-bar controls, and the smart screen panels.

Before you start
- Nothing. The LOCK button is on the wall control, sometimes under a flip-down cover.
Step by step
Step 1: Find the LOCK button on the wall control. On push-bar controls it's one of the small buttons below the big bar, sometimes behind a hinged cover. On the screen panels, lock is a menu item.
Step 2: To turn lock on: press and hold LOCK for 2 seconds. The command LED starts blinking and keeps blinking the whole time the lock is on. From now on the opener won't respond to any remote. Pressing a remote makes the opener light flash twice and nothing else happens.
Don't hold LOCK for 10 seconds. That changes the light timer instead: the opener lights flash 1 to 4 times to show the new setting.
Step 3: The wall control's own button still opens and closes the door, and so does the outdoor keypad. Lock only blocks the handheld remotes and car buttons.
Step 4: To turn lock off: press and hold LOCK for 2 seconds again. The LED stops blinking and the remotes work. On a screen panel, hold LOCK for 2 seconds or press the button under 'off' on the screen. On a doorbell-style control with no LOCK button, press and release the learn button.
Still not working? Here is what it usually is.
- The LED is blinking but holding LOCK doesn't clear it. On some wall controls a steady flashing LED is the 'passpoint' position indicator, which can't be turned off and doesn't block remotes. If the remotes work, that's what it is.
- The remotes still don't work with lock off. Battery first: see the battery guide. Then re-pair with the remote guide.
- You're locked out. Lock mode doesn't block the keypad, so enter your PIN there. If there's no keypad, come in through the house and hold LOCK on the wall control.
We diagnose the whole system, opener, door, sensors, and remotes, and tell you plainly whether it's a quick fix or time for a new unit.
Common Questions
What is lock mode for?
- Holidays and stolen remotes. Lock blocks every remote without erasing them, so when you're away or a remote has gone missing from a car, the opener only answers the wall button and the keypad. For a lost remote, erasing all remotes and re-pairing the ones you have is the more thorough fix: see the erase guide.
Does the keypad still work in lock mode?
- Yes, on LiftMaster and Chamberlain. The LiftMaster wall control instruction sheet says the door control and keyless entry still work; only remotes are blocked. That's different from Genie and SkyLink, whose locks block the keypad too.
Does myQ still work in lock mode?
- The manufacturer doesn't say either way, so test it before you rely on it while away. We'd treat lock as a block on wireless controls and assume the app may be blocked too.
