Why Is My LiftMaster or Chamberlain Opener Beeping? Battery Backup Codes
A beep every 2 seconds with a solid orange light means the opener is running on its backup battery because the power is out. A beep every 30 seconds with a flashing orange light means the battery is low. A beep every 30 seconds with a solid red light means the battery is dead and needs replacing with a 485LM.
- Works for:
- LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers with built-in battery backup, including the 8500W wall-mount, 87504, 87802, 84602, 8160WB, B970, and B4613T. The battery light sits near the learn button on the motor unit.

Before you start
- A look at whether the power is actually out: check a light in the garage
- A Phillips screwdriver and gloves if the battery needs replacing
- The replacement battery: LiftMaster 485LM
Step by step
Step 1: Match the beep and the light colour to the table below. The pattern tells you whether the opener is simply on battery power, the battery is low, or it has failed.
Step 2: If the opener is beeping every 2 seconds with a solid orange light, the opener thinks the power is out. If the rest of the garage has power, check the opener's outlet with a lamp or a phone charger. A tripped GFCI or a loose plug is the usual cause.
During a real outage the opener keeps working from the battery for about 24 hours of standby, typically quoted as around 20 full cycles. Expect the door to run slower, and the opener light and app control to be unavailable until mains power returns.
Step 3: Once power is back, the light changes to flashing green while the battery recharges, and the beeping stops. Solid green means the battery is fully charged.
Step 4: If the light is flashing orange with a beep every 30 seconds and the power is on, the battery is low and not recovering. If it doesn't change to flashing green with power confirmed at the outlet, the battery has reached the end of its life.
Step 5: A solid red light with a beep every 30 seconds means the battery can no longer hold a charge. Replace it. The batteries typically last one to two years.
Step 6: To stop the beeping while you wait for a new battery: unplug the opener, disconnect the battery, then plug the opener back in. It runs normally on mains power without the battery.
Step 7: To replace it: unplug the opener, remove the battery cover on the motor unit with a Phillips screwdriver, lift out the old battery, partly insert the new one with the terminals facing out, connect the red wire to the + terminal and the black wire to the - terminal, slide it home, refit the cover, and plug the opener in. The light shows flashing green while the new battery charges.
Use only the LiftMaster 485 series battery. The old one is a sealed lead battery: recycle it, don't bin it.
What does each code mean?
| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Beep every 2 seconds, light solid orange | Running on battery power. The opener isn't getting mains power. | If the garage has power, check the opener's outlet. Otherwise wait for the outage to end. |
| Beep every 30 seconds, light flashing orange | On battery power and the battery is low. | Restore power. If the light doesn't turn flashing green, replace the battery. |
| Beep every 30 seconds, light solid red | The battery is dead and can't recharge. | Replace the battery with a 485LM. Disconnect it in the meantime to stop the beeping. |
| No beep, light flashing green | Mains power is on and the battery is charging. | Nothing. Leave it plugged in until the light goes solid green. |
| No beep, light solid green | Mains power is on and the battery is fully charged. | Nothing. This is normal. |
Still not working? Here is what it usually is.
- The light stays orange with the power on and the outlet works. The opener's power supply has failed, which is an opener repair.
- A new battery goes red within weeks. The charging circuit on the logic board isn't charging it, and that's a board repair rather than another battery.
- The opener runs on battery but the door moves slowly or stops part way. Slower running on battery is expected; stopping part way means the door is too heavy for the battery, which points at the balance.
We diagnose the whole system, opener, door, sensors, and remotes, and tell you plainly whether it's a quick fix or time for a new unit.
Common Questions
Can I just turn the beeping off?
- Not permanently while the battery is faulty, which is the point of the beep. Disconnecting the battery stops it and the opener works normally on mains power. Replacing the battery fixes it properly.
How long does the battery last in an outage?
- LiftMaster rates a fully charged 485LM at about 24 hours of standby; around 20 full open-and-close cycles is the figure usually quoted. In a cold Winnipeg garage expect less, and don't count on the opener light or app control until the power is back.
Do I need to reprogram anything after replacing the battery?
- No. The manufacturer's replacement steps don't include any reprogramming; remotes, keypad, and travel limits are kept in the opener's memory.
