How to Connect a LiftMaster or Chamberlain Opener to myQ
Install the myQ app and add a new device. On current openers the app connects over Bluetooth and asks for one press of the learn button. If it asks you to put the opener in Wi-Fi mode instead, press the yellow learn button three times. Older openers need a myQ hub.
- Works for:
- LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers with built-in Wi-Fi, and most other openers through a myQ hub.

Before you start
- Your home Wi-Fi name and password. myQ needs a 2.4 GHz network.
- A phone with the myQ app installed
- A decent Wi-Fi signal in the garage. Check it on your phone standing under the opener.
Step by step
Step 1: Open the myQ app, sign in or create an account, and choose to add a new device.
Step 2: Pick garage door opener. The app asks if your opener has Wi-Fi built in. Built-in Wi-Fi models have a Wi-Fi or Powered by myQ logo on the unit.
Step 3: Follow the app's prompts. On current openers it connects over Bluetooth: stand within a metre of the motor unit, and press the learn button once on the wall control or the motor unit when asked. The opener's LED blinks blue and green while it connects and turns solid green when it's done. Solid blue means the Wi-Fi password was wrong.
Step 4: If the app asks you to put the opener in Wi-Fi setup mode instead, press the yellow learn button three times. The opener beeps and a blue light blinks. It stays in setup mode for 20 minutes.
Pressing twice puts the opener in a different mode. Count three presses. On a smart wall panel with a screen, use its Wi-Fi setup option instead.
Step 5: Follow the app to join the opener to your home network.
Step 6: For an older opener without Wi-Fi, use a myQ hub and its door sensor, following the app. The hub works with most sectional doors that have safety sensors, but not with DIP-switch openers.
Step 7: Test opening and closing from the app with the door in sight.
Still not working? Here is what it usually is.
- The opener can only see your 5 GHz network. Turn on 2.4 GHz on your router or set up a separate 2.4 GHz network.
- The Wi-Fi signal in the garage is too weak. Detached garages often need an extender or a mesh node.
- The opener is too old for myQ. Some older openers aren't compatible even with a hub.
