How to Program Your Car to a Genie Opener
Teach the car button the Genie remote's signal first, then put the Genie opener into learn mode and press the car button for two seconds, twice, until the opener's LED flashes and goes off.
- Works for:
- Cars with HomeLink or built-in garage buttons, on Genie Intellicode openers.

Before you start
- A working Genie remote
- The car parked outside, in front of the door
- A helper at the opener
Step by step
Step 1: In the car, hold the Genie remote about 5 cm (2 inches) from the car button. Press and hold both until the car's indicator flashes slowly, then fast. Release both.
Step 2: Have your helper put the opener into learn mode. Current units: hold PRGM/SET until the round LED turns blue, then release. Older units: press and release LEARN CODE.
Step 3: Current units: press and hold the car button for two seconds and release, then do it a second time. Older LEARN CODE units: press the car button once so the opener's LED stays on, then press it once more so the LED goes out.
Step 4: On current units, the long LED flashes blue and goes off. If the door doesn't respond, press the car button a few more times.
Step 5: Test from the car.
Which Genie opener do I have?
Look at the buttons on the motor unit. They tell you which generation you have and which set of steps to follow.
Where to look: On the motor unit. Openers from 1995 to 2011 have a LEARN CODE button. Current units have a PRGM/SET button, up and down arrow buttons marked + and -, a round LED, and a long LED. The exact layout varies by model.

- System:
- Fixed code, 9 or 12 three-position switches
- Remotes that pair:

Still not working? Here is what it usually is.
- The car never learned the remote's signal. Wait for the fast flashing before you move on.
- The 30-second window at the opener ran out. Put it back into learn mode and try again.
- Some cars need HomeLink bought or activated through the dealership before it will learn anything.
We diagnose the whole system, opener, door, sensors, and remotes, and tell you plainly whether it's a quick fix or time for a new unit.
