How to Program a Genie Keypad
Put the Genie opener into learn mode, then on the keypad enter the PIN and press the UP/DOWN key slowly three or four times until the door moves. A new Genie keypad's PIN is 3-5-7, so change it first.
- Works for:
- Genie GK-R wireless keypads. The newer GK2-R uses a different sequence, so follow its own instructions.

Before you start
- A stepladder
- A new PIN, 3 to 8 digits long
- The keypad still in your hand. Finish programming before you mount it.
- Regular alkaline batteries. Genie says not to use rechargeable ones.
Step by step
Step 1: Change the PIN first. With the keypad backlight off, press 3, 5, 7, then press PROGRAM. The LED blinks once a second. Enter your new PIN and press PROGRAM. The LED blinks twice and goes off.
Step 2: Put the opener into learn mode. Current units: hold PRGM/SET until the round LED turns blue, then release. Older units: press and release LEARN CODE.
Step 3: Wait for the keypad backlight to go off. Enter your PIN.
Step 4: Press the UP/DOWN key slowly three or four times until the door moves.
Step 5: Test from outside with the door closed.
Which Genie opener do I have?
Look at the buttons on the motor unit. They tell you which generation you have and which set of steps to follow.
Where to look: On the motor unit. Openers from 1995 to 2011 have a LEARN CODE button. Current units have a PRGM/SET button, up and down arrow buttons marked + and -, a round LED, and a long LED. The exact layout varies by model.

- System:

- Remotes that pair:

Still not working? Here is what it usually is.
- The keypad battery is weak. Cold drains them quickly.
- Nobody knows the current PIN. Hold PROGRAM and UP/DOWN together for about five seconds to reset the keypad, then start over with 3-5-7.
- The keypad is mounted behind steel siding or too far from the opener.
