Genie Door Won't Close: Fixing the Safety Sensors
If a Genie door reverses on the way down and the round LED on the opener flashes red, the Safe-T-Beam sensors are blocked or out of line. Clean the lenses and line them up until both sensor LEDs glow steady.
- Works for:
- Genie openers with Safe-T-Beam sensors near the floor on each side of the door.

Before you start
- A soft cloth
- A screwdriver
Step by step
Step 1: Find the two sensors near the floor. The sending sensor has a red LED. The receiving sensor has a green LED. Both should be steady when everything is working.
Step 2: If the red LED blinks twice and repeats, the beam is blocked or out of line. Clear anything in the way.
Step 3: Wipe both lenses clean.
Step 4: Loosen one sensor and pivot it until the red LED stops blinking and stays steady. Tighten and recheck.
Step 5: If an LED is off, check that sensor's wire back to the opener for damage or a loose connection. The table below shows which.
Step 6: Close the door with the remote to confirm.
What does each code mean?
| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Red steady, green steady | Working normally | Nothing to fix at the sensors. |
| Red blinks twice, green steady | Beam blocked or out of line, or a faulty sensor | Clear the path, clean the lenses, and realign. |
| Red blinks twice, green off | The receiving sensor's wire is missing or damaged | Check the green sensor's wire back to the opener. |
| Red blinks 3 times, green steady | Interference with the beam | Look for sunlight, a reflective surface, or another opener's sensors aimed at the green sensor. Put the red sensor on the sunny side. |
| Red blinks 4 times, green steady | The sending sensor has failed | Replace the sensors as a pair. |
| Red off, green steady | The sending sensor's wire is missing or damaged, or power was interrupted | Check the red sensor's wire back to the opener. |
| Both off | No power to the opener, or a wiring fault at the opener | Check the opener is plugged in and the sensor wires are connected. |
Still not working? Here is what it usually is.
- Low sun is hitting the receiver. Swap the two sensors to opposite sides.
- A broken wire inside the insulation, often at a staple.
- A failed sensor.
- The door is binding or out of balance, and the opener is reversing on force. On current units the long LED flashes red instead. The balance test takes two minutes.
