Genie Opener Flashing Lights: What They Mean
Current Genie openers have two LEDs, a round one and a long one. Their colours, and whether they're steady or flashing, tell you what's wrong. A flashing red round LED means the safety sensors. A flashing red long LED means the door hit something.
- Works for:
- Current Genie openers with a round LED and a long LED on the motor unit. Older models use flash-count codes with a different chart.

Step by step
Step 1: Stand under the motor unit and look at the round LED and the long LED.
Step 2: Note each one's colour and whether it's steady or flashing.
Step 3: Find the combination in the table below.
Step 4: Fix the obvious cause and run the door once. If the signal comes back, note it before calling.
What does each code mean?
| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Round flashing red, long off | Safety sensors blocked, out of line, or getting interference | Clear the beam, clean the lenses, and line the sensors up. |
| Round off, long flashing red | The door hit something on the way up or down, or a door part has failed | Check the springs, tracks, rollers, and hinges. Run the door once more to clear it. |
| Both steady red | Travel limits aren't set | Set the travel limits again. |
| Round off, long steady red | The motor got too hot and shut off to protect itself | Don't unplug it. Wait for it to cool and clear on its own. |
| Round flashing blue or purple, long off | The remote you pressed isn't programmed | Program the remote. |
| Round off, long flashing blue | Sure-Lock is on, so the door won't open | Turn Sure-Lock off at the wall console. |
| Both flashing purple | Radio receiver error | Unplug the opener for five seconds and plug it back in. |
| Both flashing red | Programming error or a failed part | Unplug the opener for five seconds. If it comes back, call a technician. |
| Both steady purple | Component error | Call a technician. |
| Both steady green (battery backup models) | Normal. The backup battery is charged and on standby | Nothing to fix. |
| Both flashing green (battery backup models) | The power is out and the opener is running on its battery | Nothing to fix at the opener. Check the breaker and the outlet if the house has power. |
Still not working? Here is what it usually is.
- A flashing red long LED that keeps coming back usually means a weak spring or a binding door, not the opener.
- Steady red LEDs after a power outage or surge mean the travel limits need to be set again.
- A signal that keeps coming back usually means a failing part.
