What the Genie Battery Backup Lights Mean

Genie openers with battery backup show the battery's state through the two LEDs on the motor unit rather than a beep. Both steady green is normal. Flashing green means the power is out and the door is running on the battery. Flashing yellow means charging. Red and yellow flashing means the battery is dead: charge it for 48 hours, and replace it if that doesn't work.

Works for:
Genie openers with the factory battery backup, including the StealthDrive Connect 7155 and the 6172H wall-mount, and openers fitted with Genie's add-on battery (models 7035, 7055, 6170, 3020H). The replacement battery is Genie part 111658.0002.S.

Before you start

  • A look at whether the power is out
  • Patience: a new or recovering battery needs 24 to 48 hours on the charger before it's tested
  • A Phillips screwdriver if the battery needs replacing

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Look at the two LEDs on the motor unit and match them to the table below. On a battery backup model, both LEDs steady green is the normal display when the power is on and the battery is charged.

  2. Step 2: Both LEDs flashing green: the power is out and the opener is running on the battery, at reduced speed. The main work light doesn't run on battery; the white courtesy LEDs come on instead and turn off after about 4 minutes. If the rest of the garage has power, check the opener's outlet.

The 7155 is rated for up to 50 cycles from the moment the power fails. Keep cycles to what you need.

  3. Step 3: Both LEDs flashing yellow: the battery is charging. This is normal after an outage or after a new battery goes in. Allow up to 48 hours.

  4. Step 4: LEDs flashing red to yellow: the battery is dead. Leave the opener plugged in for 48 hours. If the LEDs don't return to steady green, the battery needs replacing.

  5. Step 5: A single green flash now and then while the power is on is the battery cycling and is normal. It isn't a fault.

  6. Step 6: To replace the battery: unplug the opener and disconnect the battery harness, remove the two rear mounting screws, tilt the battery unit about 45 degrees and lift it off, remove the four bracket screws and lift out the battery, and disconnect the harness wires from the terminals. Fit the new battery the same way round, reassemble, and plug in. Give it 48 hours to charge.

Use only Genie's 12-volt 5 Ah battery, part 111658.0002.S. Other batteries don't work with the charger. The battery charges from the opener only.

What does each code mean?

CodeWhat it meansWhat to do
Both LEDs steady greenPower on, battery charged. Normal.Nothing.
Both LEDs flashing greenPower is out. Running on the battery.Check the outlet if the garage has power. Otherwise wait.
Both LEDs flashing yellowBattery charging.Allow up to 48 hours.
LEDs flashing red to yellowDead battery.Charge for 48 hours. If it doesn't recover, replace the battery.
Steady white LEDsCourtesy light on battery power.Nothing. It turns off after about 4 minutes.

Still not working? Here is what it usually is.

  • The LEDs show a code that isn't in the table. The non-battery codes, such as the sensor and limit faults, are in the Genie light codes guide.
  • A new battery still shows red and yellow after 48 hours. The charger in the opener isn't working, and that's an opener repair, not a battery.
  • The door runs on battery but stalls part way. Battery mode is slower and has less reserve; a door that's out of balance is too heavy for it.

We diagnose the whole system, opener, door, sensors, and remotes, and tell you plainly whether it's a quick fix or time for a new unit.

Common Questions

Does my Genie opener beep when it's on battery?

Genie's manuals don't describe a beep for the battery backup; the LEDs carry the information. If your opener is beeping, check the light codes guide for the other faults first.

How long does the battery last?

Genie puts the battery's working life at about three to five years, with a one-year warranty. The opener manual schedules a monthly test and the parts store says every six months; either way, test by unplugging the opener and running the door.

Can I add battery backup to my Genie opener?

On models 7035, 7055, 6170, and 3020H, yes, with Genie's battery; the 7035, 7055, and 3020H also need a mounting kit. Older units such as the GCG350L have no option. We can fit it during an opener visit.
